News: add reCAPTCHA to forms + find your perfect build tool

Whether it's taking advantage of Netlify updates or (re)evaluating your build tools, this month's news is all about helping you push the limits of your workflow. Plus, we've made some behind-the-scenes improvements to support more versions of the tools you love.

Fight the spammers

Add reCAPTCHA to your forms

When you use Netlify's built-in form handling we automatically run a spam filter on submissions. We only show the user a reCAPTCHA challenge if something looks suspicious. But, you can now add an explicit reCAPTCHA. It uses reCAPTCHA 2, so instead of typing hard-to-read street signs or number strings users just check a box.

Build tool battle

Choosing a JavaScript build tool

It seems like every week there's a hot new build tool. But, we're all about choosing the tool that's right for you and your workflow. Whether you need your build tool to do it all (scripting, automation, minification, oh my!) or just need a drop-in tool to handle a single task, this article looks at seven popular build tools to help you find the perfect fit.

Scrivito CMS, built right on top of Netlify

As more tools emerge to power the JAMstack ecosystem, builders are thinking about how to help end users take their projects live. Scrivito, a cloud-based JavaScript CMS, is now using Netlify to power that experience. If you want to impress content editors with on-page WYSIWYG editing (based on React components) give it a try.

Behind the scenes

Our build image is now better at building Ruby and PHP sites

We've recently made some improvements to our build image that you'll notice if you're running a Ruby or PHP site. It's open source, so check out the commit log for even more details.

Our updated dependency manager will now install any Ruby version on demand if specified in a RUBY_VERSION environment variable or a .ruby-version file.

Netlify's build infrastructure now also includes full support for PHP 5.6 and PHP 7.2 and auto installs any dependencies from a composer.json before running your build command.
